In 2044, computer hackers destroy the research records of Ambro, the largest and most powerful drug company. Before he can be caught, the lead hacker injects himself with a drug and disappears. Twenty years earlier, Frank Grieves, a former addict and current police officer, discovers a body at Ambro's corporate headquarters. Perplexed as to why his DNA scanner can not identify the body, Grieves becomes obsessed with solving the mystery. The only clue he has is the word " Morlock " hidden on the body. Grieves' superior, Nolan, does not approve of his investigation and instead orders him to work on busting the few remaining street dealers, who operate a shrinking black market since the legalisation of all narcotics. When Grieves continues his investigation, Ambro puts pressure on the police to rein him in. Eddie Rankin, Grieves' friend and a medical examiner, tells him that an unidentified drug was found in the man's body. Before Grieves or Rankin can examine it further, Ambro has the body destroyed. Against orders, Grieves returns to the site of the crime in search of more clues, where he recovers a young woman, Eva Gray, who has apparently been targeted for assassination by unknown forces. Grieves saves her life, only to find that Gray's assailant has disappeared into thin air. Grieves attempts to find a place to hide Gray, but his estranged wife, Angie, refuses to help. Gray, who is also unidentifiable, escapes his custody when he is distracted. When pushed, Rankin reveals he knows a scientist, Yuri Sidorov, who may be able to identify the unknown drug. After paying off Rankin's debt to Sidorov, the scientist tells him to return in twenty-four hours. After experiencing further obstruction from Ambro's security and his superiors, Grieves returns early to demand answers from Sidorov. There, he finds Gray, who, after Grieves threatens to harm Sidorov, reveals that she is a time-traveller from 2044. Because she is yet to be born, she has no record in Grieves' DNA database. Grieves dismisses this as the ravings of a junkie and demands to know what Ambro has planned, which he believes may be an experimental drug codenamed "Morlock". Although taken aback that he knows of the word, Gray sticks to her story. Ambro attacks Grieves as he transports Gray. Suddenly, reinforcements appear out of nowhere, disable Ambro's security forces, and disappear with Gray after injecting her with a drug. After Ambro goons attempt to kidnap his son, Grieves realises that the body he found earlier is the adult version of his 9-year-old son, Ben. "Morlock" is a code word based on The Time Machine, a book that Grieves gave to Ben. Now believing Gray's story, Grieves seeks help from Rankin, who refuses to become further involved. After Grieves leaves, Ambro orders the police to kill Rankin and kidnap Sidorov. Grieves has his family flee the city, and, after confronting Nolan, Grieves is also captured. Todd Ambro explains that they need Ben, as he will perfect their time-travelling drug, which is currently flawed in a way that prevents people from staying long in their destination unless they are dead. Ambro demonstrates by killing Sidorov and sending his body elsewhere in time. Desperate to protect his company's future, Ambro demands the police torture Ben's location from Grieves. After the others leave, Nolan sets Grieves free, saying that he knows Ambro will kill him next as a security threat. Nolan proposes they work together to escape, but Grieves instead forces one of Ambro's scientists to inject him with the time-travelling drug. Suddenly in 2044, Grieves speaks to his now-adult son and reinforces how important his mission is. Back in 2024, Grieves once again discovers the body at Ambro's headquarters, but this time it is his own body, not his son's.

Twenty-one year old Anastasia "Ana" Steele is an English literature major at Washington State University Vancouver in Vancouver, Washington. When her roommate, Kate Kavanagh, catches a cold and is unable to interview Christian Grey, a twenty-seven year old billionaire entrepreneur, for the college newspaper, Ana agrees to take Kate's place. At Christian's Seattle headquarters, she stumbles her way through the meeting. Christian, who is that year's WSU commencement speaker, takes an interest in her, and she in him. Soon after, he visits the hardware store where Ana works and offers to do a photo shoot to accompany the article for which she had interviewed him. Christian asks Ana out for coffee, but leaves abruptly after she confesses to being a romantic, saying he is not the man for her. He later sends her first edition copies of two Thomas Hardy novels, including Tess of the d'Urbervilles, as a gift, with a quote from the latter book about the dangers of relationships on an accompanying card. Ana and her friends celebrate graduation at a local bar. After drinking too much, she calls Christian, saying she is returning the books, and berating him for his behavior towards her. He goes to the bar to find her, arriving just as her photographer friend, Jos茅 Rodriquez, attempts to kiss her against her will. Ana, suddenly sick, throws up and passes out. The next morning, she wakes up in Christian's hotel room, relieved that nothing sexual happened between them. After the two kiss passionately in an elevator, and he takes her for a ride in his helicopter, a romance starts to develop. He insists, however, that she sign a non-disclosure agreement preventing her from revealing details about their relationship. He explains that he is a dominant who engages in sexual bondage relationships, but only as defined in a contract between the participants. Ana reveals that she is a virgin. While considering the agreement and negotiating her own terms, and after briefly visiting his "Red Room," a place stocked with a bed and a variety of whips and shackles, she and Christian spend the night together. The next morning, after making pancakes and meeting Christian's adoptive mother, the two go for a drive, during which Christian explains that he was introduced to his dominant practices at age 15 by a woman Ana dubs "Mrs. Robinson". His parents know nothing about this, even though "Mrs. Robinson" was and still is a friend of the family. Christian bestows a series of gifts and favors upon Ana, including a new car and a laptop. After she and Kate move to Seattle, he insists that she go over his contract before moving forward. After looking into it in some detail, Ana initially says no, but is persuaded otherwise and finds herself willingly giving her consent. During dinner at his parents' home, Ana suddenly mentions she is leaving the next day to visit her mother in Georgia. This makes Christian angry, especially when she says she wants more than the one-sided relationship he's proposing. She then goes to Georgia, visits a lounge for cocktails, and is shocked when Christian shows up. He meets her mother, takes Ana air gliding, then returns to Seattle to tend to a business emergency. After returning home, Ana and Christian have a night in his "Red Room". She consents to what he wants, but he remains emotionally distant, upsetting her. While still considering the contract, and in an effort to understand Christian's psychology, Ana asks him to demonstrate the worst punishment he would inflict on her for rule-breaking. He whips her with his belt, making her count each stroke out loud. Crushed, she declares her love for him, but says his behavior is unacceptable. He replies that he is too psychologically broken to have the relationship that she wants. Devastated and depressed, Ana leaves Christian, and he promises to send her a check for the old car he sold without her consent. As he goes after her, Ana orders him to stop. Christian tries to plead with her, saying her name, and Ana cuts him off by saying his own name, turning his plea into a farewell as the elevator doors close.

Ward Jones lands his light aircraft at an airfield in Monte Carlo, but it is destroyed following a collision with a remote controlled car operated by Thayer, a member of the secret THANATOS organisation. Jones dies in the explosion, and a package is retrieved from the wrecked aircraft by Thayer's henchwoman Maya. In a medical conference in Monte Carlo, Jones' girlfriend Yachuko escapes from Thayer's henchmen, aided by cosmetic surgeon Neil Connery. She is later kidnapped by British agent Miss Maxwell, but another of Thayer's henchwomen, Krayendorf, then captures Yachuko. Connery meets Maxwell and her boss Commander Cunningham. Jones had wanted to sell them the package and asked them to protect Yachuko, who also had access to relevant information. Connery believes that Jones has transferred the data to Yachuko using hypnosis. Cunningham demands that Connery help retrieve the information. After being reminded that he killed one of Thayer's henchmen in a fight at the conference, Connery agrees to help in exchange for the police investigation being dropped. Cunningham dispatches Connery to Malaga where Yachuko has been spotted. Connery and Maxwell are met by Juan, who has left his wedding early to greet them. Thayer's henchwoman Mildred has followed them to Malaga, but Connery hypnotizes her to reveal Yachuko's location, Krayendorf's castle. Firing an arrow, Connery short-circuits the electric fence protecting the castle and destroys its defensive machine gun position. Connery, Maxwell, Juan and their colleagues then attack the castle and defeat Krayendorf's henchmen. Juan kills Krayendorf and Connery rescues Yachuko. Using hypnosis, he accesses most of the critical information, but Mildred kills Yachuko before the process is complete. Juan then kills Mildred. Meanwhile, an "atomic nucleus" is being transported by American military police. Maya and more henchwomen dress up as can-can dancers, lure the MPs from their vehicles and steal the nucleus. With it, THANATOS can now power their "ultra-high-frequency magnetic waves", which will cause all metal machines to stop working. This will force world leaders to give THANATOS their gold. Following up information revealed by Yachuko, Cunningham persuades Connery to travel to T茅touan, Morocco, where Thayer owns a rug factory staffed exclusively by blind men. Goons try to kill Connery in the street, but he is rescued by Maya. THANATOS leader Alpha wants Connery dead, but Thayer wants to keep him alive. Connery attends a party hosted by Thayer, who resents Alpha's power. He is plotting to replace Alpha with a double, and Connery is required to change the man's face. Thayer also plans to murder his henchwomen, a fact that Connery passes on to Maya. Disguised as a blind Moroccan weaver, Connery infiltrates the factory, where the workers are in contact with dangerous radioactive materials. Connery warns a worker, who soon instigates a riot. Connery is eventually captured by Thayer. Later, at a yacht, Connery is to be forced to transform Thayer's henchman Kurt into an Alpha lookalike. Before the operation begins, Connery hypnotises Kurt, causing him to attack Thayer. Meanwhile, the female crewmembers of Thayer's yacht attack their male counterparts. The women take over the yacht, but Thayer escapes in a rubber dinghy. Alpha blames Thayer for his failure and demands that he kill himself. Thayer kills Alpha instead and takes control of THANATOS. Connery and Maya meet Juan in Munich, where they are also joined by the Scottish members of a Monte Carlo archery club. Using a Geiger counter to detect the radioactive rugs, Connery and Maya locate THANATOS's secret lair. Meanwhile, Thayer triggers the magnetic wave, paralysing machinery all over the world. Guns are no longer operational, so bows and arrows are now optimal weapons. Connery, Maya, Juan and the archers enter the base. While the archers tackle Thayer's henchmen, Connery plants an "anti-magnetic explosive" to stop the wave. He is discovered by Thayer and they fight, culminating in an archery duel in which Thayer is killed. Connery, Maya and the surviving archers escape from the base, which explodes. Cunningham wants to recruit Connery as a permanent agent, but Connery uses his hypnotic powers to dissuade him. Maya and Connery depart on Thayer's yacht for a romantic cruise.

Scientist and police captain Dr. Barrett C. Coldyron develops a prototype police robot he dubs R.O.T.O.R. (for "Robotic Officer Tactical Operations Research/Reserve") as part of his vision for preserving peace in a chaotic future. He is pressured by his superior, the corrupt Division Commander Earl Buglar, to rush R.O.T.O.R.'s development so Senator Donald Douglas, the project's financial sponsor, can use it to campaign for President. Coldyron refuses Buglar's demands to have R.O.T.O.R. ready within sixty days and resigns rather than be fired, leaving control of the project in the hands of his incompetent assistants, Dr. Houghtaling and his robot, Willard. Following Coldyron's departure, a lab accident results in R.O.T.O.R. activating and going on duty. While on patrol, it stops a motorist for speeding and, lacking higher brain functions in its programming, executes him. His fianc茅e, Sonya, becomes R.O.T.O.R.'s target because it views her as her boyfriend's accomplice, and the robot begins relentlessly pursuing her. Coldyron learns of the murder and discovers that R.O.T.O.R. has been activated, finding that it is operating under its prime directive, "to judge and execute". He saves Sonya from R.O.T.O.R. at a gas station and helps her escape, informing her that the robot will continue to pursue her and that she must therefore keep moving. Devising a plan to stop R.O.T.O.R.'s rampage, Coldyron contacts Dr. Corrine Steele, who developed the robot's combat chassis from a unique, self-teaching alloy, for assistance. They realize that as long as R.O.T.O.R. remains focused on pursuing Sonya, it will not kill anyone else unless they get in its way. At Coldyron's instruction, Sonya leads R.O.T.O.R. to a fishing camp. Coldyron and Steele arrive soon afterward, and Steele sacrifices herself to rip open R.O.T.O.R.'s chest, exposing its power core. Coldyron manages to lasso R.O.T.O.R.'s limbs with Primacord ropes to restrain it, and the robot's electrical discharge detonates the explosives, finally destroying it for good. Coldyron files a final report on the incident and leaves the police building. However, he is ambushed outside by Buglar, who murders him to cover up the corruption and embezzlement involved in funding the project. His nephew, Brett Coldyron, subsequently inherits his research and money. Deciding to continue and perfect his uncle's work, Brett creates a new R.O.T.O.R. model, upgraded with the higher brain functions necessary to make it capable of mercy and modeled after Dr. Steele's physical appearance.

Rod is a young software salesman living a successful life in Silicon Valley. He meets up with old classmate and aspiring fashion model Nathalie and begins dating her. Things go well for the couple, with Rod receiving a large bonus that he uses to start his own business, while Nathalie is chosen as a Victoria's Secret model. As they grow closer, the couple remains oblivious to signs of something going wrong around them, such as unexplained wildfires and the carcasses of diseased birds turning up on beaches. After having a romantic time and kissing in a motel, Rod and Nathalie wake up to find that their town is under attack from eagles and vultures. The birds spit acid and explode into flames upon striking the ground (having become mutated and toxic due to global warming). Rod and Nathalie escape from the motel by joining up with an ex- Marine named Ramsey and his girlfriend Becky. As they leave town, they rescue two young children, Susan and Tony, whose parents have been killed by the birds. The group proceeds to drive from one town to the next, fending off more bird attacks along the way and briefly meeting a scientist named Dr. Jones studying the phenomenon. Becky is killed by the birds. Ramsey tries to save a busload of tourists. As they leave the bus, Ramsey and the tourists are killed by acid that is dropped by the birds. Nathalie stops Rod from attempting to rescue Ramsey because she fears the birds will kill him, too. The group then continue to a gas station. The children purchase candies and Rod begrudgingly agrees to purchase gas for $100 a gallon. They then continue, running into a man who presumably needs help. This man, unnamed, then robs Rod for gas at gunpoint. As the robber slowly backs away from Rod, a bird suddenly slits his throat and he succumbs to his wounds on the side of the road. Rod, Nathalie, and the kids then continue to flee from the birds, driving into a forest where they briefly meet a " tree hugger " named Tom Hill, who talks to them about the dangers of global warming. After escaping a forest fire, the quartet ultimately settles on a small beach, where Rod fishes for dinner. As they prepare to eat, they are attacked by the birds, but then doves appear and all the birds leave in peace. The film ends as Rod, Nathalie, and the kids watch the birds fly off into the horizon.
